The question of the connection between the Canton
Kowloon Railway and the Yueh Han Railway has been often discussed. I
do not myself expect that very much through traffic would be obtained
Cat least for many years, as Hankow would remain the market for produce
from Human and Hupeh as at present, while the part of Kwang tang
through which the Yush Han Railway passes is not very productive at
any rate of goods for export. I am of opinion that this line must
always rely as its principal source of revenue on the passengers
traffic between Canton and Hongkong.
The ill-advised position of our station at Tai Sha
Tou makes it impossible that we can ever compete with the river
#teamers which are berthed in a central position close to where the
bulk of the travelling population resides.
If there is any intention of linking up the two
railways this should certainly be done by a line near the river-front
and not round the back of the city of Canton. This would be consider-
-ably shorter than the other and with several stations for passengers
in its length would be able to secure almost the whole of the traffic
which now geas by boat in addition to a well paying local traffic
from end to end of the city.
Before the rebuilding of Canton it would be easy
to carry this work out at no great cost, but when the projected im-
-promesents are once put in hand the opportunity will have been lost.
There would be no need to carry the line right
through to a junction with the Yush Han Railway at present if the policy of the Board is against that, but the line should be built as
far as Shameen and the land required for the rest of the line ear-
-marked to avoid difficulty in soquiring it later on.
I would urge you, Sir, to give this question your careful consideration, as in spite of some difficulties that may arise about acquiring the necessary land I am sure that this can be easily arranged and if the railway can get its fair share of the passenger traffic to Hongkong, as it would do if the terminal station were not in such an inconvenient place, its earnings would
